Are you where you set out to be six months ago? Or where you wanted to be?

Six months ago, Mecole Hardman was a wide receiver for the New York Jets. Aaron Rodgers was his quarterback (for a few minutes). Hardman was involved in one play in his first game of the season. As receiver #3 in a now two-receiver offense, Hardman watched most of the games from the sideline before he was traded.

On Sunday night, Mercole Hardman made the catch that won the Chiefs the Super Bowl.

I’m guessing no one made that bet six months ago.

We often ask a question in coaching: What do you want to be able to say in six months that you can’t say today?

Sometimes, clients think their coach is asking them to predict the future. But that’s not the intention at all.

This question is an opportunity to get concrete about their goals or to explore dreams that still need to find words. It could be specific or it could simply be a feeling.

The magic of coaching is recognizing the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. What needs to happen to close that gap? If you do nothing differently, will you end up realizing that vision? And if you need to do things differently, are you willing to do them?

I don’t know what Hardman set out to do six months ago. He didn’t have control over everything that happened in the last six months – including getting traded or dealing with injuries – but it wasn’t random circumstances that put him at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday. And it wasn’t pure luck that he caught the ball in the game’s final play.

Here’s a one-minute workout for you. No football knowledge is necessary. 🙂

Pause: Give yourself a minute to reflect.

Think: What do you want to be able to say in six months that you can’t say today? How close or far is that vision? What needs to happen to close the gap?

Act: Take the action necessary to get closer to that vision.

As important as it is to reflect on this as an individual, it’s even more impactful when you do this as a team. Talk with your team and see what’s possible to win the championship!
