As a life coach, I would define “successful coaching” as a powerful relationship between a coach and client that embodies trust, openness and support through thoughtful questions to help obtain the goals the client has presented. So what does this mean to anyone who might be interested in hiring a coach? Below are a few things to think about before hiring a coach to help make sure you have a successful coaching relationship.

Finding the right life coach

  1. Schedule a free session. Most coaches offer free samples sessions that often last 15-20 minutes. This is a great opportunity to connect with a few coaches to make sure this would be a coach you would like to work with and that also fits your budget.
  2. Ask lots of questions. Before talking to any coach, write down a list of questions that you would like to know about your coach. Questions might include: Are they certified? How long have they been coaching? What is their coaching style? What is their confidentiality policy? If there’s anything you want to know about the coach’s approach, just ask! A good coach will be happy to help you understand what to expect.

There are plenty of great coaches out there who just might not be the right coach for you. Make sure you find someone that you think is a good match for your style, and who will meet your needs throughout the coaching process.

Building a strong relationship

Once you have found the right life coach, here are a few tips to help strengthen the coaching relationship.

  1. Be prepared and on time. Your time is just as precious as your coach’s.
  2. Be open and bold. A good coach should make you feel safe to be willing to step outside the box in order to create new awareness.
  3. Limit your distractions during your call. This is your time, and it’s vital that it be free of interruptions.
  4. Expect Accountability. You should be able to trust your coach to follow up and to help provide accountability on your progress.

Although success looks different for every client, I don’t think you will ever have a successful coaching relationship if you and your coach aren’t a great match. Commit to finding the right coach for you. Once you’ve done that, if you show up ready to be open, trust the process, and do the work then coaching success can be yours!
