Take Your Thoughtfulness to Work Day

by | Mar 12, 2019

A client once told me she was excited about a new hire, until the new hire showed up on the first day talking about being tired, how far away she had to park, and complaining about the weather. She instantly worried she had made a mistake – this was not the energy she wanted in her office!

What had happened to that enthusiastic, inspiring person that showed up to the interview?

Find your STRENGTH at work

When you work towards being Thoughtfully Fit, STRENGTH is one of the most important practices to master! It is rooted in the idea that we are in control of how we show up. It often means we have to let go of little things that might be bothering us, or rise above whatever is making today less than perfect, and give it our best shot. It may also mean pausing a minute before reacting to an email or something said in a meeting, and being more thoughtful about how we respond.

Put your best foot forward

When my clients start a new job, we often explore how they want to be at work. We all know what kind of people we like to work with, and part of your job is to be that for those around you!

Yes, we are whole people and we should feel free to bring our full selves to work. But there is an opportunity to bring positive energy, calm, and confidence to the workplace. Feeling triggered? Ask a question before reacting. Losing patience? Slow down and make a conscious effort to get on the same page as your colleagues.

Behavior is contagious! So don’t be a nasty cold that nobody wants to catch.

Be aware of your impact on others

Starting a new job is a unique opportunity to really pause and think about who and how you want to be in the workplace. You don’t need to be Pollyanna, but you can make a conscious choice to be thoughtful with your words and in your interactions with your new colleagues. Approach new things with curiosity and questions, and your openness will likely be rewarded with stronger connections with those around you.
