What Does Taking a “Coach Approach” Mean?

by | Apr 18, 2023

Why can’t my employee just do what I tell them to the first time?

A client recently asked me that very question when struggling with one of his team members. What he realized was the problem wasn’t his employee.

Why Fixing the Problem Yourself Doesn’t Work

Instead of getting curious and having conversations about how to tackle the problem, what obstacles might get in the way, and how to design support and accountability, he’d give advice and just tell his employees what to do. When it wasn’t done exactly how we wanted, he’d get frustrated and fix it himself. As a result, he often felt overwhelmed and resentful.

In other words, the issue wasn’t his employee, it was him.

He realized this is harder than it sounds, and so he asked if we have any resources to support him on his journey to take more of a coach approach to managing – where you ask questions to help the employee identify the best path forward and take full ownership of solving their problem.

After my team put this list together for him, I thought it might be interesting for the rest of our Thoughtfully Fit community as well.
