About five years ago I quit my job as a registered nurse to become a stay-at-home dad. I knew that I wanted to do something else, but I wasn’t quite sure what that was or where I would begin. I was hopeful that if I took the time and energy to explore what interested me, I would figure it out.

I shared my ideas and goals with my wife. We would sit down and brainstorm my strengths and weakness, along with everything I thought I might want to do. I was hopeful that if I continued to do this eventually I would find something to point me in the right direction.

Then one day my wife brought home an article from Brava magazine that talked about life coaching. I read through the article, and I knew that this was the something I had been looking for. I was hopeful that if I put the time and energy into the Professional Life Coaching Certificate program at UW-Madison that this would be a great new career for me. So I enrolled!

While I was going through the program, I hired a life coach of my own. This was a game changer! I was hoping that my coach could help me prepare for exams, get organized and manage my time. The reality was, I got so much more than that. Fast forward to present day, and I am very happily working as a professional life coach on Darcy’s team.

We all have goals and dreams in our life, and reaching them starts with hope.

You need a plan to make things happen

Although hope was my initial step when I wanted to create a change in my life, I knew it wasn’t enough. I also needed a game plan. So again I hired a life coach to help me. Here are some ways my coach supported me in my quest for change.

  1. Goal Setting. My life coach asked me powerful questions to help me get clarity on my goals.
  2. Support. My coach supported, motivated and encouraged me. We took time to celebrate the wins and identified ways to strategize against obstacles that arose.
  3. Accountability. We frequently checked in on my goals that I had set and the progress that was being made on my action items to determine if I was on track or if changes needed to be made.

Hope is the beginning step when we want to create change. But hope alone can not lead to accomplishment. We need hope to turn into action. If I hadn’t put the time into finding a new path, I could have easily put my ambitions aside and never found my passion.

The fact that a life coach helped me make a plan and achieve my dream of being a coach only cemented that this was definitely the path for me.

And now I hope I can help others reach their dreams as well!
