So, what is this coaching thing anyway?
Q. What is coaching?
A. Simply put, coaching is a process that helps you get from where you are to where you want to be. Coaching creates the space to increase awareness so you can take actions to meet your goals and bring greater fulfillment to your life.
Q. What does a coach do?
A. Coaches partner with you to set goals and determine what is necessary to accomplish your goals. Coaches listen, ask questions, and challenge you to look at things from new perspectives. Coaches also provide support and accountability to help you maintain momentum towards reaching your goals.
Q. Is coaching similar to therapy?
A.Talking is required for both, but that’s really where the similarities end. In therapy, the focus is generally looking backwards to heal or repair trauma or stress that occurred in the past. In coaching, the focus looks forward. Coaching focuses on what actions can be taken now to get you to where you want to be.
Is coaching right for me?
Q. Do I need to have a major problem to work with a coach?
A. You don’t need a major problem to work with a coach. You don’t need to have a problem at all! In fact, most of the clients that work with a coach are already successful personally and/or professionally. They are just looking for more!
Q. Why would someone hire a coach?
A. Anyone looking to create some sort of change would benefit from working with a coach. Working with a coach creates the space to dream big and explore major job or life changes. Whether the change is clearly defined or it’s a gut feeling that something could be different, coaching can help!
How do I starting a coaching relationship?
Q. How do I find the best coach for ME?
A. Fit is really important when searching for a coach. Just like finding the right pair of jeans that you love, finding the right coach is essential. You want to make sure the coach you select is someone that you trust and can be vulnerable with. Darcy Luoma Coaching and Consulting has a diverse coaching team to meet the needs of any client. Your coaching journey begins with a call with our Coaching Coordinator so that we can learn more about what brought you to coaching and can match you with a coach on our team. From there you can see if there is good chemistry by having a free exploratory session with the coach.
Q. How does coaching work?
A. The coaching process starts with a New Client Packet that is filled with powerful questions about your life purpose, vision, values and goals for the future. It helps you determine what your Primary Focus Areas are for the coaching and establishes a strong foundation for your work together.
After completing this, you and your coach would meet for the Initial Discovery Session. This session is about two-hours long, and is an opportunity to paint a picture of what you are wanting in your life and clarify what you want from the coaching. You and your coach will also design your alliance on how to work together to maximize your results.
That leads into the monthly coaching, which is two 45-minute coaching sessions per month with unlimited phone and email support in between. There is homework and designed accountability at each step of the way!
Q. Do I have the opportunity to speak with the recommended coach before committing to coaching?
A. Absolutely! Fit is key. Even though the Coaching Coordinator makes a recommendation on which coach would be the best fit, it is ultimately your decision regarding the right coach for you. You will first schedule an exploratory session with our recommended coach. If you like the coach, great! If it’s not a good fit just let us know and we’ll keep trying!
What happens in a coaching conversation?
Q. What types of coaching do you offer?
A. We offer individual life coaching, sponsored executive coaching (where the organization pays for employees to be coached), team coaching and small group coaching. For more details for each type of coaching, visit our coaching page.
Q. What do we talk about?
A. The client sets the agenda for the coaching session. If you have a specific topic you want to tackle, that’s great. Otherwise your coach can help you narrow in on a topic based on your primary goals and what you discussed in your discovery session.
Q. Do I have to talk about my feelings?
A. A coach will never force you to talk about something you don’t want to talk about. That said, the coach will encourage you to look at issues from multiple perspectives, and feelings might be involved. Exploring the emotions, as well as actions, habits, perspectives and beliefs, can help raise awareness if done in the safe environment of coaching.
Q. OK, but seriously. Will my coach tell me how to fix my problem?
A. Nope. Coaching is powerful because the client is the one who determines the best course of action. A core belief in coaching is that you are the expert in your life. Even in those moments where you don’t feel like you have a good handle on anything, you still know best what will work for you. The coach might challenge, offer suggestions, and help to brainstorm, but ultimately you determine the direction at every point in the coaching relationship.
Q. I’ve never worked with a coach. Is it possible to do this wrong?
A. If you have any concerns about not doing this right, you can set that aside. You can always provide feedback to your coach or ask questions if something doesn’t feel right or if you are looking for more or less of something.
Q. How do coaching sessions take place?
A. You and your coach will determine what works best for the both of you, but typically the discovery session is done in person and all future sessions will take place by phone. It’s also possible to meet via Skype , Zoom or other mutually agreed upon technology.
Q. What if I can’t make a coaching session?
A. We do ask for 48 hours notice if you need to reschedule your coaching session, but we know that life happens. Let your coach know if you can’t make a coaching session and they will work with you to reschedule.
Q. How long does a coaching relationship last?
A. It depends. You and your coach will work together to determine how long you plan to work together based on your goals and how quickly you want to work towards those goals.
Most of our clients work with a coach for about six months. Research shows a minimum of four months is ideal for sustainable and lasting change. Clients looking for more accountability or partnering as they work towards major change might choose to work with their coach for twelve to eighteen months.
Q. How does the coaching relationship progress and then end?
A. Whether you commit to a certain length of time or choose to go month-to-month, your coach will periodically check in with you regarding how you are feeling about your progress towards your goals. Since this is a partnership, you are also welcome to discuss your goal progress with your coach at any time. The benefit of committing to a coaching relationship for a specific period of time is that you and your coach have an endpoint to be working towards together.
The last coaching session will be a celebration of all that you accomplished! This completion coaching session also provides the space to reflect on what progress you made towards your primary focus areas, what gaps still exist, and how you want to move forward to continue to make progress in your life outside the formal structure of the coaching relationship.
The goal of every coach is to coach themselves out of a job! Coaching is not meant to be a permanent relationship but it is not uncommon for clients to come back to coaching as they start working on new goals.
